Biography:
While still in his 30s, Matthew Johnson has led an extraordinary and multifaceted life. He has served as a Marine, police officer, second-generation Beaver, Intel engineer, Tesla manager, and now Vice President of Engineering at Generac.
At Generac, Matthew leads engineering teams in developing innovative clean energy products that help protect millions of people from weather-related power outages. He builds high-functioning organizations, scaling products from concept to launch while guiding teams through complexity and growth. Known for his calm, focused leadership, he coaches senior professionals and delivers results across both software and firmware systems.
During his time at Tesla, Matthew built and led teams responsible for designing next-generation battery cell manufacturing software. His work enabled the simultaneous production of tens of millions of products, using modern distributed systems and cloud engineering to solve massive-scale smart manufacturing challenges. He also led teams that developed hardware abstraction libraries to interface with electronic measurement devices, introducing several industry-first solutions.
Matthew remains deeply connected to Oregon State University. He has participated in ENGR+ alumni panels, returned to campus to recruit, and currently serves on the School of EECS Industry Advisory Board.
