From an uncertain start, computer science major streaks to the top

Alannah Oleson didn’t learn computer programming in high school because her cash-strapped school district in Roseburg, Oregon, cancelled computer classes. So, when her first Oregon State programming class started, she wondered if she’d made a big mistake.

“I was so far behind the curve and I felt so intimidated,” said the senior computer science major. “I even considered changing majors.”

Students learn through service in Puerto Rico

During the last week of March, six construction engineering management (CEM) students in the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America student chapter traveled to Puerto Rico with 26 others from eight Oregon State University colleges. Working in conjunction with Puerto Rico’s land grant university, University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, the group performed service projects in areas that directly benefited those living under difficult conditions after the devastating hurricane of September 2017.

Oregon State students recognized by NSF for outstanding research

Two students of computer science in the College of Engineering at Oregon State University received National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships that will provide three years of research funding while they attend graduate school. This prestigious award recognizes and supports outstanding early career graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines.
