2017 Women in BUILD Award

BUILD Magazine announced the School of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE) in Oregon State University’s College of Engineering as a winner of the 2017 Women in BUILD Awards.

In announcing the awards, BUILD Magazine describes the build industry as traditionally male dominated, but in recent years’ women have come to the forefront, working hard to create innovative projects.

This is the second year BUILD Magazine coordinated the Women in BUILD awards.

Doctoral student Masoud Ghodrat Abadi stays on the move

You need a scorecard to keep track of Masoud Ghodrat Abadi’s accomplishments since he arrived at Oregon State in 2014 to start his doctoral work in transportation engineering. Topping his own list is the Eno Fellowship that he earned last spring, an honor bestowed on just 20 graduate students in the entire country annually by the Eno Center for Transportation. The Eno Center is the nation’s preeminent transportation policy and professional development organization.

Johnson Hall: Dedicated to Student Success

Oregon State University’s newest building is dedicated to the success of engineering students, and it bears the name of one of the College of Engineering’s most prominent alumni.

Johnson Hall, named in honor of longtime college supporters Peter and Rosalie Johnson, serves primarily as home to the School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering. The $40 million, 58,000-square-foot facility, located on Oregon State’s central campus in Corvallis, also houses college-level programs geared toward student recruitment, retention, and success.

Partnering for better transit planning

Public transit planners throughout the nation should soon be rolling toward more informed decision making and better service thanks to a partnership between Oregon State University’s College of Engineering and the Oregon Department of Transportation.

The university and state transportation officials have teamed up on an extension to the General Transit Feed Specification, commonly known as the GTFS. The extension is called GTFS-ride.

NSF grant bolsters efforts in robotics, artificial intelligence, marine studies

The National Science Foundation has awarded $1 million to five Oregon State University researchers to study the operation of autonomous marine vehicles.

The grant further enlarges the university’s robotics footprint three months after the College of Engineering established CoRIS—the Collaborative Robotics and Intelligent Systems Institute — to advance the theory, design, development, and deployment of robots and intelligent systems able to collaborate seamlessly with people.
