Our engineering students are people who want to build a better world — bright women and men with vision, passion and purpose, who are driven to make a difference. Our program is designed to foster innovation and collaboration to help students achieve their goals.
Hands-on projects and creative learning experiences are an integral part of the curriculum at the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University. It is a “playground for learning” that fosters teamwork and leadership for a quality education.
Hands-on Learning
Hands-on learning experiences are critical to facilitate your transition from Oregon State to the engineering profession. Experiential learning starts in your first year when you jump into programming as a computer science student, or build miniature computers using microcontrollers as an electrical and computer engineering student. The hands-on experiences build on each other as you progress through the program and prepare you for a year-long senior design class in which you will design a “capstone” project with industry or academic mentors. The project exposes you to the challenges of engineering design and project management as you design, build, and test a product. You will also learn “soft” skills — such as teamwork and communication — that are vital to success in engineering. The senior design project can be a stepping stone to a job or even your own business.
Internships and Industry Networking
Touted by students and industry representatives as one of the best in the nation, the MECOP (Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program) provides students with two six-month internships during their undergraduate careers. Companies provide quality experiences and participating students are often able to land permanent jobs with the companies where they interned.
Oregon State’s CreateIT Collaboratory and Center for Applied Systems and Software provide opportunities for students to work on campus with industry and university clients on real-world projects.
In addition, we work closely with industry to provide networking opportunities with company representatives several times each year, including industry receptions and career fairs.
Research Opportunities with a World-Class Faculty
Our nationally-recognized faculty applies their expertise to impact a broad range of fields from medical devices to agriculture. They are influencing the next generation of electronic and communication devices, and contributing to a sustainable future with advances in clean and renewable energy, green nanomaterials, energy storage, and smart energy living.
These vital research labs offer amazing opportunities for students to work closely with faculty, graduate students, and other undergraduates. Hands-on research experience offers students a chance to build on their classroom knowledge and participate in investigations that advance their field.
Community of Learners
Robotics, mobile apps, open source software, and global formula racing are some examples of the activities you can be involved in. Several clubs have won national competitions — multiple times. Others do service projects in countries that desperately need help. More importantly, you’ll be part of a community and make friendships that can last a lifetime.
Leadership Development
Leadership is a strong component of success in the workplace. In EECS leadership positions include peer leaders who provide lab instruction and tutoring for the introductory courses. You can also take a lead role in a student club or serve as team leader for your senior capstone project. Opportunities are everywhere, so make sure you take advantage of them!
