The Bachelor of Science and Honors Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission’s General Criteria and Program Criteria for Civil Engineering.

Program Educational Objectives

Oregon State University Civil Engineering graduates receive a compelling education, and within 3 to 5 years of graduation will:

Establish themselves as competent civil engineering practitioners who apply sound engineering judgment and effective use of contemporary analytical, computational, and data-informed approaches to the planning, design, and delivery of civil engineering projects

Grow into trusted professionals in business, industry, consulting firms, government, or graduate study, recognized for effective communication with diverse audiences, meaningful contributions to collaborative and inclusive professional teams, ethical judgment, and adaptability to evolving technologies, methods, and industry demands

Commit to lifelong learning and continued professional development to sustain technical proficiency, pursue licensure where relevant to their career paths, remain actively engaged in the profession, and uphold public health, safety, and welfare as a paramount professional responsibility

Advance a safe, resilient, equitable, and sustainable world through civil engineering projects that address community, economic, and environmental challenges, working across disciplines and with external stakeholders, and engaging with principles of public policy and the broader societal context of engineering practice

Student Outcomes

The Oregon State Civil Engineering program prepares its graduates to achieve the Program Educational Objectives above several years into their careers. This is achieved by having students able to perform the following on graduation, well preparing them for active immediate and lifelong service in the profession:

an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.

an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.

an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.

an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.

an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.

an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.

an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Design is the essence of civil engineering. Junior and senior level courses include extensive design content, culminating in a team approach to the solution of open-ended, realistic problems, including capstone design and professional practice courses. Courses with design content include those with "design" in their titles.
