Biography

Royer’s primary research interest is human factors in architectural lighting, including topics such as color, glare, flicker, uniformity, and brightness. He works to refine lighting metrics and specification guidance, which serve as conduits for technology development. His ultimate research goals are advancing lighting quality to improve building occupants’ satisfaction and increasing the use of energy efficient lighting technologies.

Royer is an associate editor for Lighting Research & Technology, chair of the Illuminating Engineering Society Vision Science Committee, and a member of several committees within the IES and International Commission on Illumination. He is a senior engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, where he works on the Advanced Lighting Science and Technology Research program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
