Live and work anywhere – and enjoy amazing benefits – as an online computer science instructor at Oregon State University

The Oregon State University Ecampus program ranks among the highest in the United States. With an enrollment of over 3,500 students, our online postbaccalaureate and bachelor of science degree programs in computer science are the largest and fastest growing on the Oregon State campus. We are continuously hiring new instructors to keep up with the continued growth of these programs.

If you would like to work as part on a vibrant, collegial, and dedicated team of instructors who love sharing their passion for computing with students all over the world, please consider applying for one of our open online instructor positions. Some of the many benefits of working as an online CS instructor at Oregon State include:

  • Work in the nationally ranked Oregon State Ecampus program.
Our Ecampus programs consistently rank in the top five nationally. We pride ourselves on the quality of our programs, which can be attributed to our instructors’ passion, dedication, and commitment to student success.
  • Enjoy the convenience of working from anywhere.
While our online courses are asynchronous, our online instructors maintain regular student contact through office hours. Since all student communication takes place online, you can do this from anywhere you choose to live or travel.
  • Choose a teaching load that works for you.
Part-time or full-time appointments are available. You may decide on the number of courses you teach, from one per term up to three per term. You may also elect to teach during the summer term.
  • Work as an instructor, professor of practice, or professor of teaching
For applicants who have a Ph.D. and are interested in pursuing research and scholarship in computing education, OSU offers the professor of teaching position. In exchange for a 15-20% lighter teaching load, faculty in this track will have a 15-20% research and scholarship expectation.
  • Come in at a rank that is commensurate with your experience.
We hire new instructors at both the junior and senior instructor levels. Our instructors are part of a career track that provides long-term contracts and opportunities for promotion to senior instructor I and senior instructor II.
  • Enjoy a fantastic benefits package.
OSU online instructors enjoy outstanding medical, dental, and vision insurance; the choice between a state pension plan or employer contributions to an IRA; and an outstanding tuition reduction benefit that allows one family member to attend any public university in the State of Oregon for just 20% of in-state tuition.
  • Get the tools you need to succeed.
Oregon State online instructors are eligible every four or five years for a generous technology package that includes a powerful computer system with multiple monitors. In addition, Oregon State provides instructors with subscriptions to all essential software tools, including Microsoft Office 365, Adobe Acrobat Professional, Zoom, and Panapto Recorder.
  • Design and redesign online courses.
As an Oregon State online instructor, you have the opportunity to develop your own online courses and redevelop the courses you teach. Course development counts toward your normal teaching load.
  • Get the teaching support you need to succeed.
Oregon State online instructors work with teams of undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants to help them run their courses smoothly and grade student work.
  • Be a part of a community of instructors who are passionate about what they do and committed to success. As an Oregon State online CS instructor, you will join a vibrant community of instructors who share your passion and commitment. We hold regular online faculty meetings and meet in person on the OSU Corvallis campus every September for a faculty retreat. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in an in-person showcase event that brings together our online students, industry representatives, and Oregon State online instructors for a day of networking and community-building in Portland, OR.
  • Grow your professional skills and practices.
OSU online instructors receive a $1,500 annual allowance for professional development. Many of our instructors use these funds to attend professional conferences and take online courses.
  • Get involved in computing education research.
Oregon State’s Center for Research in Engineering Education Online, or CREEdO, leverages our online computer science degree programs to conduct world-class research into computing and engineering education. Our alliance with CREEdO provides golden opportunities to learn about and collaborate on computing education research projects.
