Civil and Construction Engineering Faculty Research Area
Architectural engineering faculty seek to understand and engineer the effects of light and mechanical systems within the built environment. Through design, analysis, and optimization, their work contributes to buildings that are energy efficient, sustainable, resilient, and prioritize the safety, health, comfort, and productivity of occupants.
Lighting
Faculty investigate and engineer daylighting and electric lighting in the built environment. Research areas encompass visual and non-visual effects of light, color science, dynamic façade systems, anthropogenic light at night (ALAN), energy aspects of daylighting and building performance, and solid-state lighting technologies. The goal is to contribute to sustainable, health-conscious built environments by balancing the human, ecological, and environmental aspects of light and lighting.
Mechanical Systems
Faculty pursue the integration of building mechanical systems for high-performance built environments that are energy-efficient, sustainable, resilient, and prioritize occupant safety, health and comfort. Research areas include the design, analysis, and optimization of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; building energy modeling and performance analysis; energy efficiency and sustainability; indoor environmental quality; building controls; and environmental health.

Facilities and Centers
Teaching Lighting Laboratory
A hands-on environment to directly compare and manipulate light's spatial patterns, intensity, spectrum, and timing, accelerating learning through direct observation of diverse lighting conditions and control strategies.
Daylighting, Innovation and Analysis Lab
Outfitted with electrochromic façades and skylights, tunable lighting, solar monitoring, and indoor environmental sensing, this mobile facility enables controlled studies of human visual and non-visual responses to light in realistic environments.
Sustainable, Healthy, and Resilient Buildings Lab
The lab features cutting-edge facilities and a wide selection of instruments to support research on Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) monitoring and control, including a ASHRAE standard test duct apparatus.
