BSEE 1938 - EECSBurke Hayes' student days were disrupted by the economic depression but he graduated from Oregon State in 1938 and went on to postgraduate studies at MIT. He received a commission in the US Navy in 1942, following the outbreak of World War II. After the war, he became the only electrical engineer (with three civil engineers) in the formation of a consulting engineering company. Together with fellow OSU graduates, Holly Cornell and Jim Howland, and with Professor Fred Merryfield, he formed the company that became known as CH2M, and later CH2M Hill. The company is now a major consulting engineering and project management organization with offices throughout the US and overseas, thanks to the dedication and commitment to excellence of men like Burke Hayes. Mr. Hayes received the OSU Distinguished Service Award in 1986.
