
PhD, ChE 1950, Michigan - CBEEJim Knudsen joined the Chemical Engineering faculty in 1949 and served the department for 32 years. He also served the College as Assistant Dean for 11 years and Associate Dean for 10 years. Jim is known as a prominent scholar in the area of heat transfer. His book, co-authored with D.L. Katz, Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer, published in 1958, was a major reference for heat transfer. He is also a chapter editor of Perry's Chemical Engineers Handbook. He was awarded the 1977 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Founders Award and the 1983 D.Q. Kern Award for Heat Transfer by AIChE/ASME. Dr. Knudsen was elected President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 1980. He also served on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Engineering Technology and as President on the Oregon State Board of Engineering Examiners.
