Biography

Fifth Dean Fred Burgess was a faculty member at Oregon State for 36 years, beginning as an instructor in 1953 and retiring after 19 years as Dean in 1989. He specialized in environmental engineering and planning, water pollution control, and waste treatment, and obtained his MS in sanitary engineering from Harvard in 1955. He was very active in professional societies throughout his career and received many professional honors. He served as head of the Civil Engineering Department from 1966 to 1971. Fred was a true leader with a strong, but humorous, style. He was instrumental in securing funding for the ECE building--the last one built at OSU with full state funding.
