David Schlegel graduated with a degree in agricultural technology from OSU in 1950. He went on to the University of California, Berkeley and earned his PhD in 1954 before joining the faculty of the Department of Plant Pathology at Berkeley. He pursued research interests in viruses and virus replication in plants, became department chair in 1972, and later served as dean of the College of Natural Resources.
Schlegel also was the assistant director of the Agricultural Experiment Station until his retirement in the early 1990s. He served as the chair of the Western Association of Agricultural Experiment Station Directors and later, at the national level, as the chair of the Experiment Station Committee on Organization and Policy. He was also the western region coordinator for a national sustainable agriculture program that began in 1988. Currently, he is an emeritus professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley.
