
After graduation Charlie Wicks went on to the Carnegie Institute of Technology and obtained his MS (1952) and PhD (1954). He returned to OSU in 1954 serving as a faculty member in Chemical Engineering for 34 years, and as Head of the Department for 17 years until his retirement in 1987. He was recognized for excellence in teaching and advising and received many awards, including three Carter Awards, two IFC Awards for Outstanding Teacher and Advisor, the Dar Reese Excellence in Advising Award, the Order of Orange Award, and OSU Alumni Award for Outstanding Teacher.
He wrote several textbooks, among which Fundamentals of Momentum, Heat, and Mass Transfer, co-authored with colleagues J.R. Welty and R.E. Wilson, is a best seller in the field. Dr. Wicks was active in the AIChE and Chemical Engineers of Oregon, serving as President in 1973-74. He was a member of many honor societies, and has been nationally and internationally recognized in the area of mass transfer operations.
