LEAP Mentoring Program

Help shape the next generation of engineers

The Leadership, Empowerment, and Purpose (LEAP) program helps College of Engineering students grow as leaders, professionals, and problem-solvers through workshops, community-building activities, industry experiences, and a capstone Leadership Action project.

Mentorship is a cornerstone of the experience. Students are matched with mentors in the fall and stay connected throughout the academic year.

LEAP mentors share their knowledge, encourage reflection, and help students connect classroom learning to future careers. Through a handful of meaningful conversations over the academic year, mentors can make a lasting impact on a student's growth and confidence.

Impact on Students

For many students, a mentor provides valuable perspective during a pivotal stage of their academic and professional journey.

Mentorship helps students:

  • Connect academic experiences to professional opportunities.
  • Strengthen communication, leadership, and teamwork skills.
  • Explore internships, research opportunities, and career pathways.
  • Build confidence as they prepare for the LEAP Summit.

Being a LEAP mentor has been a meaningful way to stay connected to my alma mater.

Getting to know my mentee and learning from her unique perspective and ambitions while watching her grow toward her goals this year has been incredibly inspiring.

Benefits for Mentors

Mentors often find that participating in LEAP:

  • Strengthens their connection to Oregon State and the College of Engineering.
  • Creates opportunities to support emerging engineers.
  • Builds coaching, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Provides insight into the experiences and aspirations of today's students.

Role of a LEAP Mentor

Mentors are guides, not advisors. The role is centered on listening, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing relevant experiences.

LEAP Mentors:

  • Meet with their assigned student at least three times during the academic year.
  • Discuss leadership development, career goals, and professional growth.
  • Share insight into engineering workplaces and career pathways.
  • Encourage reflection on LEAP activities, industry experiences, and leadership projects.

My LEAP students were the epitome of the quality of College of Engineering students as demonstrated by their seriousness in their studies and willingness to engage with a seven-decade old graduate!

The future is very bright.
