Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN)
Oregon State University’s School of Civil and Construction Engineering offers a Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Fellowship Program in Sustainable High-Performance Buildings and Infrastructure for students pursuing doctoral studies. This program aims to prepare future researchers and university teachers in this critical field.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
- Be admitted to a doctoral program in Civil Engineering at Oregon State University, including current doctoral students
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Have an excellent academic record
- Pursue a program of study and doctoral research related to sustainable high-performance buildings and infrastructure
- Intend to pursue a career in research and/or university teaching
Program Features:
- Fellowship Stipend: Up to $37,000 annually, based on financial need
- Tuition and Fees: Covered by the program
- Health Insurance: Provided to all GAANN Fellows
- Duration: Up to three years, with potential for renewal based on performance and funding availability
Program Requirements:
- Maintain full-time enrollment and satisfactory academic progress; refer to the CCE Graduate Student Handbook available from CCE Graduate Advising
- Fellows must be engaged in full-time coursework or research during each summer session
- Engage in research focused on sustainable high-performance buildings and infrastructure
- Complete a two-semester supervised teaching experience
- Participate in professional development activities and interdisciplinary seminars
- Annual reassessment of financial need through FAFSA

GAANN Fellows are selected based on academic merit, alignment with program goals, and financial need. The selection committee includes faculty from the School of Civil and Construction Engineering that perform research and teaching related to sustainable high-performance buildings and infrastructure.
