Leadership, Empowerment, and Purpose (LEAP)

Developing future engineers through leadership, personal empowerment, and professional purpose for all COE students beyond the classroom.

The LEAP program empowers students to become well-rounded engineering leaders and professionals through a self-directed and impactful program tailored to their personal values.

LEAP is a one-year program available to all COE students focused on leadership skills and professional development. The program is designed to put the student in control, allowing them to focus their learning on building specific skills. Through workshops, mentorship from COE alumni, and project-based learning, LEAP participants gain the skills and experiences needed to excel in their chosen career field.

Throughout the year LEAP hosts various skill workshops, social activities and even industry tours to Seattle and Portland all free for the students! In the Spring term, the LEAP Summit will give participants the opportunity to share their leadership experience and development to a panel of mentors.

Participating in LEAP requires a time commitment roughly equivalent to a 2-credit course spread over three terms.

Program Structure

LEAP is a year-long program divided into three terms:

Key Components

Leadership Action
A student-driven initiative where you put newfound skills into practice. Whether it’s leading a club, conducting informational interviews, or spearheading a project, the Leadership Action provides a platform for learning and self-discovery.

LEAP Summit
The annual LEAP Summit highlights LEAP's focus on empowerment and professional purpose. Students present their Leadership Action in a 3-minute presentation to a panel of mentors and peers, showcasing their growth and achievements.

Mentorship
Students are paired with COE alumni mentors who offer guidance and support. Mentors connect with students at least three times a year to discuss leadership development and career goals.

Using Canvas
All LEAP program details, including events, tracking progress, and submitting assignments, are managed through Canvas. Ensure you regularly check Canvas for updates and requirements.

Mentoring

During the fall term, students will be paired with a trained mentor, an alumnus/alumna of the College of Engineering who is excited to give back. These mentors offer valuable guidance and support. They can provide career advice, share industry insights, and help students navigate the challenges of professional development. The pairs will connect at least three times over the year to check-in with students on their leadership skill development and set them on the path to success. Mentorship will be facilitated by LEAP staff using the Alumni Association’s OSU Connections program, an existing platform already being used by other units on campus. This platform connects students with OSU alumni and we provide a guide for their engagements.
