Types of Scholarship and Grant Opportunities

COE’s annual scholarships are awarded for one academic year at a time. Students are encouraged to apply each year via the COE Scholarship Application that follows our annual timeline (November 1 – February 15). One application allows students to be considered for any and all scholarships in the college they qualify for.

There are 300+ annual scholarships available to all COE students. These scholarships are limited and highly competitive.

Annual scholarship recipients are selected from the annual scholarship application process. All students are evaluated holistically using a rubric that includes four primary evaluation criteria:

  • Financial Need
  • Career Readiness
  • Academic and/or Other Challenges and Barriers
  • Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Contributions

These categories consist of short essay-style questions included in the scholarship application.

  • Amount: Annual scholarships typically range from $1,000 - $2,000
  • Who qualifies to apply?
    • Any College of Engineering student

The College of Engineering Dean’s Scholarship is a selective and competitive merit-based $2,000/academic year scholarship offered to both in state and out of state students.

COE’s Student Success Initiative’s (SSI) Scholarship is a competitive renewable scholarship at $2,000/academic year that is both merit and need-based.

Unveiled in 2020, as a result of the visionary collaboration between the College of Engineering and key partners, the Catalyst Scholar Program exemplifies a profound commitment to student success. The Catalyst Scholar Program is a competitive and highly-selective cohort-style program that provides coordinated academic and social support complemented by invaluable financial assistance.

The CIE Scholarship Program was launched in 2022 by the School of Civil and Construction Engineering (CCE) and esteemed industry leaders and corporate partners. This student success effort is intended to aid students by coupling financial support with peer-to-peer guidance through the college experience.

COE’s completion scholarships are available to students within three terms of degree completion. These awards are highly competitive and funding is limited.

  • Amount: Completion Scholarships are typically $500 - $1,000
  • Who qualifies to apply?
    • Students must be pursuing a degree in the College of Engineering
    • Students must be in good academic standing
    • Students must be within 3 terms from completing their degree, yet at risk of not completing their degree for financial reasons

COE’s Ecampus undergraduate students can be considered for scholarships each term. All Ecampus undergraduate students are encouraged to apply via ScholarDollars.

  • Amount:
    • Ecampus/COE Scholarships are typically $500 - $1,000
  • Who qualifies to apply?
    • Students must be pursuing a degree in the College of Engineering
    • Students must be an Ecampus student
    • Students must be in good academic standing

The College of Engineering provides limited financial assistance to undergraduate students facing emergency situations. This emergency funding is intended to support students during crises that significantly impact their personal well-being or academic progress. Due to limited resources and high demand, not all requests can be funded.

Funding Details

  • Award Amount: Emergency scholarships typically range from $200 to $1,000, depending on available funding.
  • Availability: Awards are contingent on funding availability and the number of applications received each term.

Eligibility

To qualify for an emergency scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program within the College of Engineering.
  • Maintain good academic standing as defined by the college's policies.

Application Process

  • Open on a Term-by-term Basis: The application for the COE Undergraduate Emergency Scholarship is available each term unless funds have been fully allocated.
  • If the Application is Closed: If the application is closed during a term due to lack of funding availability, it may reopen in subsequent terms.
  • Reapplication: Students may apply each term. However, priority will be given to applicants who have not previously received emergency funding.

Disbursement Information

  • Emergency scholarships will be applied directly to the recipient’s student tuition account.
  • This funding offsets tuition costs, allowing students to allocate personal resources toward
immediate needs outside of tuition and fees.

We are excited to announce the Fall 2024 launch of our Registration Hold Grant program, which is an extension of the Financial Readiness and Success program.

The program provides a one-time grant of up to $1,000 to help eligible students pay their OSU bill to register for the upcoming term.

Purpose and alignment with Prosperity Widely Shared

  • This grant program offers support for students experiencing a financial barrier to registration.
  • This helps students persist and complete their academic program in alignment with the university’s Prosperity Widely Shared strategy where every student graduates.
  • The successful pilot grant program in academic year 2023-24 affirmed the need and commitment to establish a sustained program.

Eligibility for grant

  • Active degree-seeking undergraduate students
  • Enrolled in the current term
  • Unable to register for the upcoming term because of a financial registration hold
  • Have not previously received a Registration Hold Grant
  • Have no academic suspension or academic misconduct holds

Requirements

  • Students complete an application responding to survey questions about their financial need or hardship.
  • Upon receiving the grant, the student must make an appointment with OSU’s Center for the Advancement of Financial Education (CAFÉ) to learn about financial literacy resources and fill out a FAFSA, if eligible, to optimize their financial aid options.
  • Students who drop their courses or do not register for their CAFE appointment risk having their grant reversed.

Process and timeline

  • The Registration Hold Grant Program Committee has representation from the Office of Financial Aid, the Controller’s Unit, and Office of the Registrar. The committee administers the program in alignment with the university’s strategic plan, with oversight by executives from each respective division.
  • Each term, the committee will proactively conduct outreach to undergraduates with a financial registration hold with information about the grant program and a link to the application.
  • To apply for the grant, students complete an online application form and provide information about their financial need.
  • The Registration Hold Grant online application is open Monday through Wednesday of week 10 during fall, winter and spring terms.
  • The applications are reviewed by the committee and the grants are awarded prioritized based on students’ financial need, and subject to the availability of funds.
  • Students are notified prior to the end of the term regarding the outcome of the application review, including the amount of the grant if awarded.
  • The grant is applied directly to the student’s outstanding account balance and the students are notified via email.

We will notify you on Wednesday, December 5 of the students who have been awarded a grant.

Sincerely,
The Registration Hold Grant Program Committee
