Plagiarism Detection Tools
Moss
What is Moss?
Moss What is Moss? "Moss (for a Measure of Software Similarity) is an automatic system for determining the similarity of programs. To date, the main application of Moss has been in detecting plagiarism in programming classes. Since its development in 1994, Moss has been highly effective in this role. The algorithm behind moss is a significant improvement over other cheating detection algorithms (at least, over those known to us)."
Moss is a powerful piece of software written at Stanford for detecting similarity in software. It supports most of the languages we use in our program and can be run from command-line (e.g., on flip by a script) or using one of the GUIs or clients written for it. The moss software can be difficult to navigate. Stephen Redfield has written a moss usage guide which can help you get set up initially to run it by command-line and understand the results.
