Biography

Following receipt of his BS degree in civil engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, Rex Elder came west to receive his MSCE from OSU in 1942. Upon his graduation, Mr. Elder, a specialist in hydraulic models, joined the Tennessee Valley Authority from which he directed the renowned TVA Hydraulics Laboratory (later the Engineering Laboratory) until his retirement from the agency in 1972. He then joined the Bechtel Civil and Minerals Company where he became Engineering Manager for the Hydraulic and Hydrology Group in San Francisco.

As an international authority on dams, reservoirs and large hydraulic structures, Mr. Elder has received several awards from the American Society of Civil Engineers, including its most prestigious tribute, that of Honorary Member. He was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 1978.
