After receiving a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at Oregon State College, Ramesh Malhotra obtained a master’s and PhD in fluid mechanics at Colorado State University. He worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at CSU before returning to India as a CSIR Pool Officer at the University of Roorkee. In 1964 he joined the Department of Applied Mechanics at IIT Delhi. During his 28 years at IIT Dehli, Malhotra served as head of the Department of Applied Mechanics, head of the Instrument Design and Development Center, and head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. He also served as Dean of Student Affairs, Dean of Research and Development, Deputy Director, and managing director for the Foundation for Innovation and Technology Transfer. Malhotra took a leave of absence from IIT Delhi to serve as the Director of IIT Kanpur from 1992 to 1997. Subsequently, he helped establish The Quantum Institute, an education project aiming to offer higher education over the internet, and served as chairperson for five years.
