John Young has an MBA from Stanford and honorary doctorates from OSU, Idaho, and Purdue. He joined Hewlett-Packard in 1958 and rose through several executive positions before becoming executive vice president, a director, and finally the president of the entire corporation. Under his guidance, HP' s computer-related business grew from 40% to 70% of the company's revenue and the facility in Corvallis was established.

On retirement in 1992, Dr. Young formed a non-profit organization dedicated to the formation of information infrastructures for development in the next century. He has served on numerous boards including Wells Fargo, Chevron, Weyerhaeuser, Lucent Technologies, SmithKline Beecham, Affymetrix, and Stanford Research Institute. He was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 1991 and serves as co-chairman of President Clinton's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology.
