A Seabee (Construction Battalion) Executive Officer and Officer-in-Charge, he supervised construction jobs at Midway, Pearl Harbor, and Tinian during World War II. After the war, he served the Navy in various capacities, including Staff Civil Engineer in the Navy Department in Washington, DC. He left the Navy in 1961, and after two years with Bechtel, began a general contracting company in the San Francisco Bay area. He was president of the Peninsula Builders Exchange in California in 1972-73, president of the San Francisco branch of ASCE in 1974-76, and was active with the Society of American Military Engineers and the Associated General Contractors. He received the OSU College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997. Jim Marsh is a dedicated engineer who served society in many ways in war and peace.
