MSME 1952 - MIME

Following graduation, Don Hays joined General Motors. He served in the US Army from 1954-56, then returned to GM to pursue a career in automotive research, eventually becoming head of fluid mechanics at the research labs in Warren, Michigan. He did pioneering work in fluid bearing analysis and advancement of the field of tribology (friction, lubrication, and wear) through his extensive guidance and cultivation of tribological research and professional society activities. In 1959, he received the ASME Pi Tau Sigma Gold Medal Award for significant achievement within 10 years of graduation. In 1983, he received the Mayo D. Hersey Award from ASME for distinguished and continuing contributions to the advancement of lubrication science and engineering. He was also technical editor of the ASME Journal of Lubrication Technology for five years. Mr. Hays is a Life Fellow of ASME. He retired in 1989.
