The qualifying examination is a Materials Mechanics PhD program requirement that should be completed by the end of a student’s fifth academic-year term. Four or more courses from the core Materials Mechanics coursework, as well as ME 507 SEM/Materials Science, must be completed prior to the qualifying examination following the requirements below. Any variation from these basic requirements must be approved by the MM faculty.
Minimum Requirements: Earn a combined GPA of 3.00 or better in Materials Mechanics option coursework, as well as a B- or better in all individual courses taken at OSU during the PhD program. Courses can be retaken as needed prior to the deadline stated above. The Materials Mechanics faculty will review the academic record of qualifying students as a part of regularly scheduled Materials Mechanics program meetings. The faculty will make a recommendation on each student’s qualification for the PhD program (pass or fail) based on the qualifying requirements. Though called an “examination,” the student is not present at the review meeting. The student will pass or fail this examination solely on the merit of their transcript.
