Head, School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering

Welcome to the School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering!

Our school is an inclusive, diverse community of students, faculty, and staff who are dedicated to creating a better future. We invite you to join us.

Our dynamic faculty has wide-ranging and complementary expertise in chemical, bio-, and environmental engineering. The synergy of these three distinct, yet interrelated, fields under one roof enables mutual collaboration and cross-disciplinary study.

We offer ABET-accredited undergraduate programs in all three majors. Our programs are focused on helping students achieve their full potential, with the goal of producing work-ready graduates. Our curriculum emphasizes practical, hands-on learning, designed to help students acquire the engineering skills they will need to succeed in their careers. Coursework is supplemented with enriching experiences in undergraduate research, industry internships, conferences, and club activities.

Graduate scholars will find a wealth of opportunities to immerse themselves in substantial research projects, present their findings at regional and national conferences, get hands-on access to unique research capabilities and develop collaborations with leading scientists and engineers at national laboratories, and have their work published in prominent, peer-reviewed journals.

With annual expenditures of $7.9 million, our highly productive research programs are concentrated in a variety of globally relevant application areas, including sustainable energy, clean water, advanced materials, health and biotechnology, and engineering education. Work takes place on scales ranging from the nano to the macro — whether we’re studying the interaction of molecules on the surface of a catalyst or at a three-celled stormwater research facility for field-scale experiments.

Our facilities include more than 16,000 square feet of dedicated lab space, outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment and safety features. Specialized facilities include near-ambient X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, high-resolution micro computed tomography, clean water resource laboratories, biofabrication facilities, and the latest in computational resources.

Student success is foremost in our mission. As a school, we pride ourselves on fostering a culture that is supportive, collaborative, and responsive to individual needs and differences. Our faculty and professional advising staff are here to help every student chart their own course toward a degree and a rewarding career. Our graduates go on to work at highly ranked universities, national laboratories, and industry-leading companies, such as ETH Zurich, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and Intel.

Whatever your academic and career goals, I am confident that you can discover the inspiration, mentorship, and support you will need in order to achieve them here.
