Armed with tiny, programmable Cozmo robots, a team of Oregon State University undergraduates have embarked on a program that aims to inspire local K-12 students to pursue technology fields. Along the way, computer science undergraduate Sharlena Luyen became inspired to change her career path. She delayed graduation to earn a minor in education in addition to her degree in computer science.
I want to put things in the ocean that can generate electricity. In pursuit of that, I do research which works to answer the question, “How do we design things that go in the ocean and generate electricity?” This is different from, “What things can we design that go in the ocean and generate electricity?” If I can answer the how, the answer to the what will be much better.
Alannah Oleson was selected as a finalist for the Computing Research Association’s (CRA) Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher Award. The award recognizes undergraduates who have made significant contributions to research.

Attending the world’s largest gathering of women technologists was transformational for Stephanie Hughes, a computer science undergraduate. But it wasn’t enough for her.
“I was just one person and I wanted to make sure other women at Oregon State had that experience,” said Hughes who is the president of Oregon State’s women’s chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM-W OSU).
Daniel Hernandez thought he would be the first member of his family to graduate from college. But his twin brother, Marcos, claimed that honor, graduating from Oregon State with a degree in chemistry last winter. Daniel, in addition to the rigors of earning a chemical engineering degree, undertook an amazing six-month internship at E. & J. Gallo Winery last year.
Many students experience some rough adjustments during their freshman year, but for Alison Bowden it was more than a typical transition from home to college life.
“I live with a mental illness, and the last year and a half was really hard for me,” said Bowden, an undergraduate in electrical and computer engineering at Oregon State University.
Employees in the Center for Applied Systems and Software (CASS) in the College of Engineering are teaching a workshop for high school teachers to learn how to create mobile apps for Apple devices. The three-day workshop is being held August 13 – 15, 2018 by Professional and Continuing Education (PACE) at Oregon State University.
A week-long STEM Academy camp to introduce high-school students to cybersecurity was held on the Oregon State University through campus last week. Although it was the first time the camp was held in Corvallis, it is the third year the camp has been operating.
