Dual Major or Double Degree in Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering

Because the Manufacturing Engineering and Mechanical Engineering programs are closely related, many students elect to earn a dual major or double degree in these two disciplines.

Dual Major in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering—Product Development Option

Earning a dual major in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering means you will receive one Bachelor of Science diploma listing both majors. It requires one additional course beyond 180.

To complete the dual ME-MfgE major:

  • Complete the requirements as described in the catalog for the Manufacturing Engineering major.

  • Complete BacCore requirements.

  • As part of the major, take ME 430 as the single required Restricted Elective for the major.

  • Because several manufacturing courses apply as technical electives within the Mechanical Engineering major, the one additional course needed to complete the ME major is ME 451.

Double Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering—Product Development Option

Earning a double degree in Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering means you will receive two Bachelor of Science diplomas: one in Mechanical Engineering and another in Manufacturing Engineering. Completing a BS ME degree in addition to a BS MfgE degree entails 32 additional credits beyond the credit requirement for the BS MfgE degree alone.

To complete the double degree in MfgE and IE:

  • Complete the requirements for the Manufacturing Engineering major, including ME 430 for the single required Restricted Elective.

  • Complete BacCore requirements.

  • Take ME 451.

  • Complete 28 more credits not used for either the Manufacturing Engineering major, nor for BacCore. These credits can be part of a minor, be general electives of any sort, or even a third major. Credits must be taken at Oregon State.
