Earning a Dual Major or Double Degree in IE and MfgE

Because the Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering programs are closely related, many students elect to earn a dual major or double degree in these two disciplines.

Dual Major in Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering

Earning a dual major in Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering means you will receive one Bachelor's of Science diploma listing both majors, and it involves 2 additional courses beyond the course requirements for the MfgE major alone.

To complete the dual MfgE-IE major:

  • Use the Academic Plan for Manufacturing Engineering to record your credits and chart your progress.

  • Apply to the Manufacturing Engineering Professional Program at the appropriate point in your program sequence.

  • Once admitted to the Manufacturing Engineering Professional Program, petition the College of Engineering to officially add Industrial Engineering as a second major.

  • Take IE 425 for your manufacturing systems elective.

  • Take one (1) additional upper-division IE course from the Restricted Electives list found on the Academic Plan for Industrial Engineering.

  • Take IE 426 if Pro-IE major was added after spring 2017.

Double Degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering

Earning a double degree in Manufacturing Engineering and Industrial Engineering means you will receive two Bachelor's of Science diplomas: one in manufacturing engineering and another in industrial engineering. Completing a BS IE degree in addition to a BS MfgE degree entails 32 additional credits beyond the credit requirement for the BS MfgE degree alone.

To complete the double degree in MfgE and IE:

  • Use the Academic Plan for Manufacturing Engineering to record your credits and chart your progress.

  • Apply to the Manufacturing Engineering Professional Program at the appropriate point in your program sequence.

  • Once admitted to the Manufacturing Engineering Professional Program, petition the College of Engineering to officially add Industrial Engineering as a second degree.

  • Take IE 425 for your manufacturing systems elective.

  • Complete 32 additional credits as specified below. All of these credits must be earned at OSU.

    • 3-4 credits of upper-division IE coursework from the Restricted Electives list found on the Academic Plan for Industrial Engineering (see note below regarding IE 426).
    • 12-13 additional credits from the Restricted Electives list
      • If Pro-IE major was added before summer 2017, it is strongly recommended that students take IE 426 as part of their 12-13 additional credits from the IE Restricted Elective list.
      • If Pro-IE major was added after spring 2017, IE 426 must be included in the 12-13 additional credits from the IE Restricted Elective list.
    • 16 credits of other OSU coursework not being applied to your MfgE degree requirements
