New Research Center Focuses on Solar Manufacturing
Work at the Oregon Process Innovation Center for Sustainable Solar Cell Manufacturing (OPIC for short), a new signature research center housed at the Corvallis-based Microproducts Breakthrough Institute, will focus on improving existing solar technologies and developing next-generation concepts. "We're aiming for a revolution in solar cell processing and manufacturing," says CBEE associate professor Greg Herman, the center's associate director. MIME Student, Wind Ensemble Member Loses Fight with Cancer
Karena Dokken, an OSU senior double majoring in mechanical engineering and music, died on February 10th after a 14-month battle with Ewing's sarcoma. This exceptional young woman touched many lives both within and beyond the OSU community. On February 22, as the OSU Wind Ensemble's music filled the Kelley Engineering Center atrium, Karena's friends and family gathered for a celebration of her life. More…

EECS alum Scott Kveton is not even 40 years old, but he's accomplished a great deal since graduating from OSU in 1997. The founder of OSU's Open Source Lab that now hosts Linux, Apache, and Drupal, Kveton has also worked for several startup companies and has started a few of his own. More…
Tripwire CEO, CoE Bd. Chair Named OR Tech Exec of the Year
Earlier this month, the Oregon Council of TechAmerica named James B. Johnson, president and CEO of Portland-based Tripwire — and current chair of the CoE Advisory Board — as the 2010 Technology Executive of the Year. In his advocacy for greater technology/engineering education and economic development throughout the state, Johnson has made the success of the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnology Institute (ONAMI) one of his top priorities. New Electron Microscopy and Imaging Facility Director Arrives at OSU
A five-month search chaired by MIME associate professor Jay Kruzic led to the January 2010 hiring of Yi Liu as the new director of OSU's Electron Microscopy and Imaging Facility, which is partially supported by the CoE. Liu, who holds doctoral degrees in materials science and mechanical engineering, formerly directed the electron microscopy facility at Wayne State University. More…

Middle School Summer Science Camp at OSU: Call for Applications
The State 4-H Office is inviting applications from Oregon middle school students entering grades 6, 7, and 8 to attend the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp at OSU in August. All selected campers will be fully funded by scholarship. Designed to enhance middle schoolers' knowledge in all areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, this 2-week program is jointly sponsored by the colleges of Engineering and Science, the SMILE program, and the Department of 4-H Youth Development Education. Artists Take to the Walls in the KEC
Last month, Emily Lux and Nate Marcel of Forest Grove, winners of the recent EECS-sponsored mural design competition, transformed a wall in the KEC west entryway with a 10' x 30' painting titled "Powered by Sustainability." While it's already available 24/7 for inspection by KEC visitors, the formal "unveiling" won't happen until May 14th, during the 2010 Engineering Expo. More…
