This position is on the technical career path and is part of the Operating Services team, whose focus is on the Hump Process Control (HPC) system, Flat Yard Process Control (FPC) and Yard Modeling and Optimization projects. The HPC system controls switches, braking components and
locomotives, while accepting integrated sensor information to safely and accurately classify rail cars. The FPC projects are client server based to remotely automate control of yard switches, track blue flags and derails to add efficiencies to the yard. The Yard Modeling and Optimization projects use mathematical methods, process modeling and simulation techniques to optimize the business.

This position will provide support for the HPC engineers while learning and understanding all technical details of the HPC system. The position will lead the technical design, development, and implementation of yard modeling and optimization tools. This position will also support the architecture design, development, and implementation of an acceptance test lab and advanced simulation environment for the HPC and FPC systems. Primary focuses are software engineering activities including: Gathering and defining technical requirements; planning software development activities; providing technical leadership of onshore and offshore software development teams; performing software development in C, C++, and/or Java; supporting the implementation, monitoring and maintenance of deployed systems while ensuring systems meet functionality, reliability and performance goals.

This position is a part of the Technical Career Path Process. Accountabilities



*  Independantly perform complex tasks using subject matter expertise and transfer knowledge to team members
*  Analyze application level messaging using a foundational understanding of the messages being exchanged
*  Troubleshoot issues and identiy defects
*  Analyze the functional and technical requirements of the HPC system and back office applications including system interface requirements and interface control documents
*  Effectively manage work time and deliver a quality product within acceptable time limits
*  Use basic working knowledge of at least one Union Pacific business process to explain how assigned component fits into business processes
*  Solve problems using established precedents
*  Understand and integrate solutions in a multi-systems environment, providing a seamless look to the customer
*  Set priorities and understand when to deviate from procedure if the end result meets standards
(Supervisors typically review the work product or results after completion.)
*  Provide significant advice, counsel, information and/or analysis for decision makers

Qualifications

Required


*  A Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of this requirement.
*  6 year(s) experience / knowledge in Information Technology, specifically in software development

Preferred

*  Experience with Process Control Technologies
*  Experience with various software development methodologies
*  Experience with process engineering, modeling, simulation, and optimization technologies
