Cowlitz PUD is excited to announce we are currently recruiting for two summer Engineering Internships.  Qualified candidates must be  enrolled in an accredited college program leading to a Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (junior level or above preferred).

The Engineering Intern will apply basic engineering skills in the performance of specific substation, transmission and distribution design assignments.  This position is intended to develop engineering skills and judgment.

ENGINEERING INTERN - TEMPORARY/PART-TIME ($3,591-5,098/month DOE)




Public  Utility  District  No.  1  of  Cowlitz  County  (better  known  as  Cowlitz  PUD)  is  a  publicly  owned municipal corporation of the State of Washington.  The purpose of this municipal corporate organization is for efficient generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy.  The PUD is owned by the residents of Cowlitz County and operates on revenues from the sales of its services.   The PUD has limited statutory authority to levy taxes.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Engineering Intern will apply basic engineering skills in the performance  of  specific  substation,  transmission  and  distribution  design  assignments.  Position  is intended to develop engineering skills and judgment.

Incumbent must be enrolled in an accredited college program leading to a Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (junior level or above preferred).

POSITION:

Engineering Intern (Temporary/Part-Time) Grade I - Non-exempt


POSITION PURPOSE:
Incumbent will apply basic engineering skills in the performance of specific substation, transmission and
distribution design assignments. Position is intended to develop engineering skills and judgment.

REPORT TO:                         Director of Engineering

DUTIES & FUNCTIONS:
Under close supervision of a qualified engineer, the Engineering Intern will:

*     Assist in developing construction standards and guidelines.
*     Assist in evaluating materials and equipment.
*     Assist in performing analysis and data gathering on electric distribution systems.
*     Assist in evaluating procedures for routine maintenance, preventive maintenance, and condition- based maintenance on existing and newly installed electric utility equipment.
*     Assist with the installation, testing, and data entry associated with various computer software used by the electric utility industry.
*     Assist with the engineering design, procurement of materials, and overall construction management on typical electric utility projects.
*     Assist with contacting customers to resolve problems associated with quality of electric service.
*     Perform basic engineering and economic studies and recommend solutions based on the findings.

Other Position Functions:
Assist with other engineering duties as assigned.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
*     Must have a basic knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the electrical engineering field.
*     Demonstrated skill using Autocad and Microsoft Office products such as Excel and Word.
*     Must be articulate, courteous and able to work harmoniously with the public as well as other employees.
*     Must be able to understand instructions and use initiative in the solution of engineering problems.
*     Demonstrated ability to be punctual and regular in attendance.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
*     Must be in good physical condition, able to traverse moderate terrain.
*     Work entails driving and entering/exiting a vehicle in all driving conditions.
*     Must be able to work for extended periods of time in a seated position.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
*     Well-lit, temperature-controlled office building.

*     Subject to outside weather/driving conditions when working in the field.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Must be enrolled in an accredited college program leading to a Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical
Engineering (junior level or above preferred).

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
*     Must be neat in appearance.
*     Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to drive safely in all weather/road conditions.
*     Must be able to pass District's physical examination.
*     Must qualify for the District's auto liability insurance.
