Get an ENGR account
Anyone taking any course within the College of Engineering may have a COE computing account. This account will provide access to both the Linux and Windows networks within the college.
How do you get a COE computing account?
Account activation is automatic! Go to http://engr.oregonstate.edu/teach from any computer. You will need to have cookies enabled. You will need your ONID username and password. Your account will be created in a matter of minutes. If you're on campus and need access to a browser, you can find Account Creation Terminals in Dearborn 115 and 119, Owen 241, and Kelley 1130. The Account Creation Terminals are usually standing off by themselves and will have a sign.
How do you change your COE computing account password if you have forgotten it?
Students can go to http://engr.oregonstate.edu/teach or use the Account Creation Terminals and use the same procedure as for creating accounts.
If you remember your password and want to change it anyway - you can log in to the account maintenance system from any web browser.
Passwords are governed by the following policies that are automatically enforced at the time the account is setup or an attempt is made to change the password:
- No control characters like; [Ctrl], [Alt].
- The password has to be at least 6 characters long.
- It must include letters and something else, like numbers or punctuation.
- However, it can't just be letters followed by numbers or numbers followed by letters.
- It can't include @ or #.
- It shouldn't be based on a single word, even if from a language other than English. Replacing letters with numbers is not good enough.
Last we run it through a quick password cracker to insure it's secure.
How do I access data and email using my account?
Topics such as Email access, SSH (secure shell), Windows drive mappings, and SFTP (Secure File Transfer Protocol are a few of the subjects that can be found here.
When will my account be terminated?
COE support will delete accounts of all users once they are no longer employed, enrolled, or in a faculty approved affiliation with the College.
Accounts may also be terminated if COE support determines they are being abused by the user.
COE does not provide lifetime email accounts or aliases.
Oregon State University provides a lifetime e-mail forwarding address for alumni. The format of this e-mail address is "firstname.lastname@example.org", where you choose your own username. E-mail sent to this account will be automatically forwarded to another account of your choice. For more information on this service, click here.
Account Removal Process
If an Undergrad does not register for a class in ENGR, or is not listed as a CoE major in BANNER, the existing account is slated for removal. An email warning will be sent midway through the unregistered term. When the student does not register a second term, the account is removed after the registration window is over. So there is a one term "grace period." If there are special circumstances, it is up to faculty to bring this to our attention. If the students does not heed the email warnings, they loose their account. "Deleted account files are available for a short time after accounts are deleted. We do archive our accounts to DVD, but long term storage is not guaranteed."
The policy with grads has always been a more difficult issue, as they tend to hang around for sometime after their course work is through. Its basically the same as the undergrads. They have the same obligation to register in order to use the facilities. It is up to the graduate student to bring deletion notices to the attention of their major professor if they wish their account to be spared. We will, at the request of the major professor, allow a three-term grace period for grads, with the account removal process occurring the fourth term, if they don't register. But they cannot "not register" for four terms in a row (summer inclusive) without losing their account.
